Lt. Gov. Garcia announces $4.8 million in AmeriCorps grants for Colorado

DENVER – June 22, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia announced today 15 organizations in Colorado will receive $4.8 million through AmeriCorps grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The 18 grants awarded to 15 Colorado organizations will support more than 1,100 AmeriCorps members across the state who will engage in numerous activities including energy and water conservation, increasing literacy rates in children and providing learning opportunities for preschoolers and their families.

“AmeriCorps members have served Colorado’s children, families and communities very well over the years, improving the education and quality of life for thousands of or most vulnerable residents.” said Garcia “We are grateful to the Corporation for National and Community Service for these grants that will place AmeriCorps members in even more organizations and communities to make Colorado a better and stronger state.”

On a national level, AmeriCorps engages 75,000 Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs. Its members serve through more than 15,000 nonprofit and faith-based organizations in rural and urban communities throughout the nation. Among other accomplishments, AmeriCorps members last year mobilized 4 million community volunteers, and tutored, mentored or served more than 5.2 million disadvantaged youth.

Since 1994, more than 900,000 Americans have provided more than 1 billion hours of service to their communities and country through AmeriCorps. More than 25,000 Colorado residents have served more than 23 million hours and have qualified for Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards totaling more than $53,990,000. Currently, more than 12,000 citizens of all ages and backgrounds serve in CNCS programs such as Senior Corps, AmeriCorps or the Social Innovation Fund in Colorado.

AmeriCorps is a national service program administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service that engages Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet critical needs. Members tutor and mentor youth, expand health services, build affordable housing, run after-school programs, support veterans, help communities respond to disasters, and recruit and train volunteers.
